Update to recall of Coca-Cola products

Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Co., after an initial voluntary recall of specific Coca-Cola brand canned products, has issued a clarification update on the product codes of the products that were identified with sharp edges on the cans, which have the potential of causing injury to those who use the product, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Feb. 28.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Chris Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The voluntary recall is limited to only the specific production codes listed below. If the “LX…” portion is not on the can code (for example, there are no letters after the date at all, or if there are letters other than “LX”), that product is not part of the affected lots.

Additionally, if a second line of code is present, the second line should end in the character “2.” If the second line ends in “1” or any other character, it is not part of these affected lots.

The following products are affected by this recall:

• Pibb Xtra, Artificially Flavored Spicy Cherry Soda, 12 ounce can: Packed in 12 packs with a production code Oct 01 18 LXF
• Pibb Zero, Artificially Flavored Sugar Free Spicy Cherry Soda, 12 ounce can: Packed in 12 packs with a production code May 07 18 LXF
• Barq's Root Beer, 12 ounce can: Packed in 12 packs with a production code of Sep 17 18 LXF
• Diet Coke Lime, 12 ounce can: Packed in 12 packs with a production code of May 07 18 LXE
• Sprite Zero, Lemon-Lime Soda, 12 ounce can: Packed in 12 packs with production codes of Apr 30 18 LXD, May 07 18 LXD, May 14 18 LXC and May 28 18 LXA

No other production codes are affected. Customers should return the product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
