Treehouse Foods recalls some sunflower kernel products
Treehouse Foods is voluntarily recalling some products that may be affected by a supplier's expanded recall of sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.
The following products are affected by this recall. The items either contain the recalled kernels or used the same production line as the kernels:
- Amport Foods Sunflower Seeds Roasted & Unsalted, 8.5 ounces: UPC code 071725748003 with "best buy" date of Dec. 3, 2016.
- Amport Foods Sunflower Seeds Roasted & Salted, 8.5 ounces: UPC 071725748010 with "best buy" date of Dec. 26, 2016.
- Amport Foods Dark Chocolate Almond, 11 ounces: UPC 071725712387 with "best buy" date of Jan. 7, 2017.
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date, but the illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear. Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
Questions about this recall can be directed to Treehouse Foods at 1-800-756-5781, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST.
