Smucker Company expands recall of canned cat food

The J.M.Smucker Company has added several more products to an earlier recall of certain varieties of its canned cat food, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Jan. 13. The original recall, which stated the food had low levels of thiamine or Vitamin B1, was announced by the company Jan. 4.

ALFOODACT messages originate from the Defense Logistics Agency's food safety office.

DeCA has publicized the updated information to all its stores, said Chris Wicker, a public health advisor for the Defense Commissary Agency headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The following new products were added to the worldwide recall:

Cats fed diets low in thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature.

Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which include ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these symptoms. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
