Russ Davis Wholesale recalls multiple products due to potential Salmonella risk

Russ Davis Wholesale of Wadena, Minnesota, is recalling multiple products out of an abundance of caution because they contain recalled cucumbers from Baloian Farms which may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Dec. 6.

Salmonella can be potentially life-threatening, especially to infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella’s most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella’s symptoms usually develop between eight to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food and last about four to seven days.

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has publicized this recall to all its stores, according to Richard Stith, supervisory consumer safety officer for DeCA Headquarters and Support Center at Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.    

The recalled items were distributed to food service and retail customers in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The product comes in clear plastic packages of various sizes marked with a 7-digit lot code preceded by an “X” on the label. The recalled lot codes for whole cucumbers are listed on the product labels, or pictures section.

The potential for contamination was noted after trace forward indicated that Baloian Farms cucumbers had been processed and distributed through Russ Davis Wholesale.
