Pier-C Produce Recalls Onions from Mexico

-Pier-C Produce Inc. of Leamington, Canada, is recalling whole two-pound white onions of Mexican- origin, supplied from Keeler Family Farms and sold as Pier-C 2lb white onions, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Nov. 5.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, chief, public health division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.

               
The following brand is affected by this recall:

•    Pier-C Produce, UPC 033383600512, two-pound mesh bags

The recalled product was delivered to a single retailer in Florida between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23. The product was also delivered to a single wholesaler in Florida between Aug. 9 and Aug. 24.

Salmonella can be potentially life-threatening, especially to infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella’s most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella’s symptoms usually develop between eight to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food and last about four to seven days.

This recall does not affect any other items in the Pier-C Produce Inc. product catalogue. To date, no illnesses have been reported. Pier-C Produce Inc. is conducting this recall voluntarily. 

Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
