Nestle USA recalls Drumstick ice cream
The company received positive test results for listeria from equipment contact surfaces from a location on the production line where these products are made; however, there have been no positive test results from the products themselves.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this product withdrawal to all its stores, said Richard Stith, lead consumer safety officer for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.
The following products are affected by this recall:
- Nestle Drumstick Cones Club Pack, 16 count, 4.6 ounce each: UPC 72554-11096 with "best by" dates from June 2, 2017 through June 15, 2017.
- Nestle Drumstick Vanilla Pack, 24 count, 4.6 ounce each: UPC 72554-00160 with "best by" dates from June 16, 2017 through June 19, 2017.
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date, but the illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear.
