Kashi Company expands recall of granola bars
Kashi Company has added two more products to an earlier recall of granola bars that could be contaminated with Listeria, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent June 16. The original recall, which stated that sunflower kernels used in the production of the bars could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, was announced June 5.
DeCA has publicized the updated information to all its stores, said Chris Wicker, a public health advisor for the Defense Commissary Agency headquarters at Fort Lee, Va. Whenever a commissary has a recalled product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.
The following four new products were added to the recall:
- Kashi GOLEAN Honey Pecan Baklava Bars, 5 - count, UPC 18627 10474, "best if used before dates" of July 21, Aug. 07, Sept. 13, Sept. 22, and Oct. 20.
- Bear Naked Soft Baked Granola, Cinnamon + Sunflower Butter 11 ounces, UPC 84623 10163, "best if used by" dates of Aug 13 to Jan. 11, 2017
The original recall listed the following product:
- Kashi Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars, 14.4 ounces, 12 count: Package UPC 18627 37948 with "best if used by date" of March 1, 2017 or earlier.
Date codes for the Honey Pecan Baklava Bars can be found on the top of the box, and on the bottom of the pouch of the Bear Naked Granola product.
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
