Hill's Pet Nutrition expands recall of select canned dog food for excessive vitamin D
Hill’s Pet Nutrition is expanding its voluntary recall of select canned dog food products because they may have elevated levels of vitamin D, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent March 21.
The expansion follows an initial recall announced Feb. 1 with Hill’s determination that additional canned products were affected by the vitamin premix. No dry foods, cat foods or treats are affected by this recall, the company added.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, lead consumer safety officer for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.
The following products in DeCA’s inventory are added to the expanded recall:
- Hill's® Science Diet® Adult Chicken & Barley Entrée Dog Food 13 ounces, 12-pack: SKU number 7037, Lot Code/Date Code 092020T22
- Hill's® Science Diet® Beef & Barley Entrée 13 ounces, 12-pack: SKU number 7039, Lot Code/Date Codes 092020T31 and 102020T21.
The following products in DeCA’s inventory were announced in the initial recall on Feb.1:

While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Pet owners with dogs who have consumed these products and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian.
Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
