Hard –Boiled and Peeled Eggs recall expanded

Almark Foods is expanding their initial voluntary recall of some hard-boiled and peeled egg products to include all hard-boiled eggs manufactured at their Gainesville, Georgia plant because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Dec. 24. This recall will include all retail, pillow pack, frozen, diced and protein kit products.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, Chief, Public Health Division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.           

The affected products can be identified by viewing the printed “best if used by” date coding on the product package. If the “best if used by” code starts with the prefix “G”, the product was manufactured at the company’s Gainesville, Georgia facility and is subject to this recall. Products with the prefix “N” or “Y” are not subject to this recall. For Protein Kit products, consumers are advised to check the code on the actual egg package within the kit.

The following products with all “best if used by” dates up through March 2, 2020 and identified with the prefix “G” are affected by this recall expansion:

Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear.

Customers should return these products to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
