Cottonelle Flushable Wipes Recalled

Kimberly-Clark recalls flushable wipes due to bacteria.

Kimberly-Clark is voluntarily recalling a limited number of Cottonelle® Flushable Wipes and Cottonelle® GentlePlus Flushable Wipes because they may be contaminated with Pluralibacter gergoviae, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message dated Oct. 9.
The bacterium, previously known as Enterobacter gergoviae, can cause an infection in humans, and is an opportunistic pathogen. Although it is part of the normal intestinal flora, individuals with a weakened immune system, or who suffer from a serious pre-existing condition, have been treated surgically, or are part of other susceptible groups are at particular risk of infection.
According to the company, there is a low rate of non-serious complaints like irritation and minor infection associated with use of the product.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, chief, public health division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.

The highlighted items above have been identified and are known to be carried at one of the military retail facilities. Customers can also visit the Cottonelle website to check their item using their automated lot checker.
Only the items manufactured between Feb. 7 and Sept. 14, and distributed between Feb. 14, and Sept. 28 are affected by the recall. No other Cottonelle® products are affected by this recall and are safe to use.
