College hoops, frozen foods feed March savings
FORT LEE, Va. (Feb. 27, 2017) – Frozen food savings, spotlighting healthy choices, the frenzy of college hoops and more take center stage in military commissaries during March.
"For patron savings and promotions, commissaries are as busy as the action on college basketball courts," said Tracie Russ, sales director for the Defense Commissary Agency. "We've got plenty of special deals for our patrons from frozen food month with exciting store displays to discounts connected to the annual college basketball championship tournament.
"By the way, as you're shopping for savings, don't forget to check out our nutrition guide program with color-coded shelf tags that make it easier to spot products featuring attributes such as low sodium, low fat, no-added sugar, high fiber and whole grain along with organic items," she added.
DeCA's industry partners – vendors, suppliers and brokers – are collaborating with commissaries in March to offer discounts beyond everyday savings. Overseas stores may have substitute events for certain promotional programs. Also, shoppers can find even more deals on this website, along with the commissary sales flyer, which features discounted items and healthy recipe ideas.
Customers are asked to check their local commissary for details on dates and times for the following promotions:
- ProCamps. From March 27 to April 9, select commissaries worldwide will have a chance to win one of 10 ProCamps for their installation. Winning installations will host a free, two-day football camp for military children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Campers will learn from and play with NFL players like Andre Roberts (Detroit Lions), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals) and Alejandro Villanueva (Pittsburgh Steelers) among others. Qualification for a camp is based on an installation's commissary sales of designated P&G products and customer votes. Patrons will see mass displays in participating commissaries.
- 'Hoop' eats! From March 1 to 26, Kraft Heinz will offer coupon deals for $5 off five items on many of its brands in stateside commissaries. Stores will also have product and recipe displays. Participating brands include Ore-Ida, TGI Fridays, Kraft Natural Cheese, Heinz Relish, Oscar Meyer, Maxwell House Café Collection and Planters Nuts.
- "Salute to Savings." Throughout March, General Mills is honoring all military members with in-store coupons as well as premium giveaways worldwide.
- Nathan's, Smithfield and Eckrich's Mobile Sampling Tour. From March 22 to July 9, a traveling team will set up grilling samples of hot dogs and sausages in commissaries, offering high-value coupons and gift-for-purchase promotions at 35 installations in the Washington, D.C., area, Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. They will also hold 15 military events in Germany, Italy and England.
"March is a great time to visit your commissary," Russ said. "With our cool pricing in frozen foods and our mad promotions throughout the store for the college basketball tournament, the commissary is definitely worth the trip!"
