The Coastal Companies issues voluntary recall on items with fresh start cucumbers
The Coastal Companies is issuing a voluntary recall of 17 products that were produced from cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc., due to the potential for salmonella contamination, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent June 17.
Salmonella can be potentially life-threatening, especially to infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella’s most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella’s symptoms usually develop between eight to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food and last about four to seven days.
The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has publicized this recall to all its stores, according to Richard Stith, supervisory consumer safety officer for DeCA Headquarters and Support Center at Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.
These products were distributed by two Maryland companies, East Coast Fresh in Laurel and Hearn Kirkwood in Jessup.
The affected products were distributed between May 6 and May 21, to multiple customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
