Bumble Bee recalls some tuna products

Bumble Bee Foods, LLC, is voluntarily recalling some tuna products due to possible under-processing at a co-pack facility, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent March 17.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all affected stores, said Christopher Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

"We have confirmed that we carry one of the three products that are involved in this recall," said Wicker. "We have issued that information to the stories and they are pulling the affected product from the shelves."

The following product is affected by this recall:

• Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water 5 ounces: UPC 8660000020, "best by" dates of Feb. 10, 2019, Feb. 16, 2019, Feb. 17, 2019, Feb. 18, 2019, Feb. 22, 2019, Feb. 23, 2019 and Feb. 25, 2019.

There have been no reports of illness associated with these products to date. The process deviation occurred in a co-pack facility not owned or operated by Bumble Bee. The company issues the recall out of "an abundance of caution" after the co-packer discovered there were deviations in the commercial sterilization process during its routine quality audit. The deviations could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens which could lead to life-threatening illnesses if consumed.

Customers who purchased this product at the commissary can return it for a refund.
