Beech-Nut Stage 1 Rice Baby Cereal recalled and discontinued
Beech-Nut Nutrition is voluntarily recalling one lot of their Stage 1, Single Grain Rice Baby Cereal because routine sampling revealed levels of naturally occurring inorganic arsenic above the FDA guidance level, according to a recall notice from the Defense Commissary Agency’s food safety office sent June 8.
Although the rice flour had been previously tested and confirmed to be within FDA guidance levels, routine sampling identified heightened levels beyond those guidance levels. In addition to the recall, Beech-Nut, concerned about the ability to consistently obtain rice flour well-below the FDA guidance level and company specifications, decided to exit the market for this product out of safety concerns for infants and children.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, Chief, Public Health Division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.
The following products are affected by this recall:
- Beech-Nut Rice Cereal, 8 ounces: UPC 52200034705 with product codes 103470XXXX and 093470XXXX and expiration date of May 1, 2022.
The expiration date and product numbers can be found at the bottom of the Beech-Nut Single Rice Cereal canister.
No other production dates or Beech-Nut products are affected by this recall and no illnesses have been reported.
Customers should return the product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
