Guggisberg cheese products recalled over listeria concerns
Guggisberg Cheese Inc. is voluntarily recalling some colby cheese products after their supplier identified Listeria monocytogenes during routine, random testing of the product, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Feb. 15.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall notice to all its stores. Whenever a commissary has a recalled product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.
The following products affected by this recall are sliced at the deli counter with no UPC and chunked with no bar code with "use by" dates of June 1, 2017 through Oct. 27, 2017:
- Guggisberg Cheddar Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Colby Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Farmer's Cheese Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Garden Vegetable Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Marble Horns, 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Marble Longhorn, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Pepper Jack Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Thunder Jack Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
- Guggisberg Cheese with Yogurt Cultures Deli Horns, 20/1 lb, 2/6 lb & 2/15 lb
The following products affected by this recall carry UPC codes with "use by" dates of June 1, 2017 through Oct. 27, 2017:
- Guggisberg Exact Marble Mini Rounds, 12/12 ounces: UPC 710917 361018
- Guggisberg Exact Colby Mini Rounds, 12/12 ounces: UPC 710917 361025
- Guggisberg Exact Pepper Jack Mini Rounds, 12/12 ounces: UPC 710917 361032
No illnesses have been reported to date.
Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear.
