Edgewell Personal Care Recalls Banana Boat Sunscreen Due to the Presence of Human Carcinogen
Edgewell Personal Care Company is recalling three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 because the product contains benzene, a human carcinogen, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent July 30.
Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin, and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, Chief, Public Health Division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.
The following product is affected by this recall:
- Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray SPF 30, 6 ounces: UPC 0-79656-04041-8, lot codes 20016AF, 20084BF and 21139AF and expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023 and April 2024
No other batches of Hair & Scalp and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended. Anyone who has a recalled product in his or her possession should dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
