Fresh Express adds items, updates information on recalled lettuce products

Fresh Express announced corrected information to its initial June 28 voluntary recall of some salad products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and/or carrots produced at its Streamwood, Illinois, facility due to a possible health risk from Cyclospora, according to an updated Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent July 7.

This update revises two inadvertent product omissions, ounce, “use-before” and UPC corrections, the message said.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. A person may become infected after ingesting contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue. The infection is treated with antibiotics and most people respond quickly to treatment.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, Chief, Public Health Division, DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.

The following salad products, all with a production code of Z178 or lower, are affected by this recall. Customers should look for product and production code numbers such as Z177, Z176, Z175, Z174, Z173, Z172, Z171, Z170, Z169, Z168, Z167, Z166, Z165, etc. The use-by/before dates will adjust accordingly and vary based on the lower production code.
