Theo Chocolate recalls dark chocolate bars due to undeclared allergy

Theo Chocolate is recalling 3 ounce Sea Salt 70% Dark Chocolate bars because they may contain an undeclared allergen, milk, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent March 29.

Customers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Richard Stith, supervisory consumer safety officer for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has recalled or withdrawn products in its inventory, they are immediately removed from store shelves.    

The following product is affected by the recall:

• Theo Chocolate 3 ounce Sea Salt 70% Dark Chocolate: UPC 8 74492 00325 8, lot code 3092529, Best-By date of January 2020.

The lot code and Best-By date are found on the back side of the bar’s packaging. No other product sold under the Theo Chocolate brand is affected by the recall.

The product actually contains salted toffee dark chocolate bars, instead of sea salt dark chocolate. The toffee contains butter, which is a milk allergen, but the 3oz Sea Salt 70% Dark Chocolate label does not declare milk.

No illnesses have been reported to-date. Customers should return the product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
