Cat food recalled due to low levels of essential nutrient
The J.M. Smucker Company is voluntarily recalling limited lots of 9Lives, EverPet and Special Kitty canned cat food due to possible low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Jan. 4.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Christopher Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

There have been no illnesses reported to date and no other J.M. Smucker Company products are affected by this recall.
Cats fed diets low in thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which include ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these symptoms. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible. Customers who purchased any of these products at the commissary should bring them back for a full refund. Questions about this recall can be directed to J.M. Smucker Company consumer relations at 800-828-9980.
