Kayem Foods recalls chicken sausage products due to misbranding

Kayem Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 22,182 pounds of chicken sausage products due to misbranding, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Jan. 19.

The products bear incorrect nutrition labeling and are encased in pork casings, which are not declared on the label and may cause allergic reactions in those allergic to pork proteins.

The Defense Commissary Agency carries these products and has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Christopher Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, it is immediately removed from store shelves.

The following product is affected by this recall:

• al fresco Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage 12 oz: bearing identification code "308 BW12 USE/FRZ BY FEB 7, 2016."

The chicken sausage products were produced Nov. 4, 2015, and bear the establishment number "EST. P-7839" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Customers who purchased this product at the commissary should return it for a full refund.
