Osamu Corporation recalls sushi products due to high mercury level

Osamu Corporation is recalling its Tuna Fillet Saku due to elevated levels of mercury according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Dec. 29, 2017. This product is an ingredient used in the sushi department. 

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Chris Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The product involved in the recall is:

• Osamu Corporation Tuna Fillet Saku (Product of Indonesia) - All lots and all pack sizes of Osamu Corporation Tuna which says “Product of Indonesia” and/or “caught from the Indian Ocean.”

The elevated levels of mercury were found during routine laboratory sampling from multiple locations and lots. Ingesting too much Mercury can cause serious health problems such as kidney and nervous system damage. Symptoms of mercury include irritability, shyness, tremors, changes in vision or hearing, memory problems, depression, and numbness and tingling in hands, feet or around the mouth.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

Customers should return any tuna sushi products to the store of purchase for a full refund.
