Apple Ridge Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious apples recalled
Jack Brown Produce Inc. is voluntarily recalling Apple Ridge brand Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious apples processed and shipped by Nyblad Orchards Inc., one of its suppliers, after routine testing indicated the presence of listeria monocytogenes, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Dec. 19.
The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Chris Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.
The recalled apples were sold under the Apple Ridge brand name on or after Dec. 11. The affected products include:
- Honeycrisp apples, 2 lb clear plastic bags
- Gala, Fuji and Golden Delicious apples, 3 lb clear plastic bags
- Fuji and Gala apples, 5 lb red-netted mesh bags
- Gala, Fuji and Honeycrisp apples, tray-packed and individually sold
The recalled products can be further identified by the following lot numbers:
- Fuji: NOI 163, 165, 167, 169, 174
- Honeycrisp: NOI 159, 160, 173
- Golden Delicious: NOI 168
- Gala: NOI 164, 166 on either the product labels and/or bag-closure clip
Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date, but the illness caused by these bacteria can take up to 70 days to appear. Customers should return this product to the commissary of purchase for a full refund.
