Whole Foods Market recalls blue cheese products due to possible Listeria contamination

Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese due to possible Listeria contamination. The Defense Commissary Agency carried this product in four of its store delis: Annapolis Naval Support Activity Maryland; Dover Air Force Base Maryland; Fort Belvoir, Virginia and Fort Myer, Virginia.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all affected stores, said Christopher Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The following product is affected by this recall:

• Maytag Blue Raw Milk Blue Cheese, 8 ounces: PLU numbers beginning with 293308 and "sell-by" dates of 1/20/2016 and 3/21/16.

The product was sold cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap reading "Maytag Blue Raw Milk," "Maytag Blue" or "Maytag Iowa Blue Cheese".

Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infections may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall to date.

Customers who purchased any of these products at the commissary are asked not to consume the recalled items and return them for a refund.
