Banquet chicken nugget meals recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Conagra Brands Inc. is voluntarily recalling some Banquet chicken nugget meals because the brownie dessert may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent April 21.

The Defense Commissary Agency has publicized this recall to all its stores, said Christopher Wicker, a public health advisor for DeCA headquarters at Fort Lee, Virginia. Whenever a commissary has a recalled or withdrawn product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from store shelves.

The following product is affected by this recall:

• Banquet Chicken Nuggets with Mac & Cheese 7.4 ounce: UPC 3100080921 with a "best if used by" date of July 20, 2018

The products bear the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service establishment number P-9 on the side of the box.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the product. Customers who purchased these products at the commissary should return them for a full refund.

Salmonella can be potentially life-threatening, especially to infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. It can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella's most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella's symptoms usually develop between eight to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food and last about four to seven days.
